al Qaeda in Iraq giving information to coalition forces

According to a new article published at the Times Online, Iraqi insurgents are giving up information to coalition forces.  Apparently, the lower level ranks are disgusted by the groups babarism

Fed up with being part of a group that cuts off a person’s face with piano wire to teach others a lesson, dozens of low-level members of al-Qaeda in Iraq are daring to become informants for the US military in a hostile Baghdad neighbourhood.

The ground-breaking move in Doura is part of a wider trend that has started in other al-Qaeda hotspots across the country and in which Sunni insurgent groups and tribal sheikhs have stood together with the coalition against the extremist movement.

According to Rocky Gibbs, Commander of the 4th Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, people who were working for al Qaeda in Iraq are turning and want to reconcile and have peace. Information about this latest ‘surge’ of troops in the area has al Qaeda scrambling resulting in scores of enemies that have been captured, killed, or forced to flee.

This is a huge shift, because we are seeing for the first time that citizens of Iraq are willing to give up al Qaeda and not provide them safe haven. One of the main reasons, it is believed, that they are seeing the shift is that locals and even al Qaeda members are disgusted with al Qaeda’s barbaric tactics. Those tactics include:

“It is only after al-Qaeda has become truly barbaric and done things like, to teach lessons to people, cut their face off with piano wire in front of their family and then murdered everybody except one child who told the tale afterwards

This is just the latest good news in the latest troop surge. It’s a shame that it’s difficult to find this news in a paper that is from the United States.
