Democrats want to remove ‘John Doe’ provision

This is another one that you’ll have to file under ‘this makes absolutely no sense’.  But then again, that has been Congress’ specialty as of late.  According to a Washington Times’ article, the Democrats have failed to include the ‘John Doe’ provision into homeland security legislation.

The John Doe provision was created to keep the identities secret of those who came forward to out others for suspicious behavior.  Meaning that if you saw someone doing something, you could contact authorities and keep your anonymity.  This all was spawned after 6 Muslim imams were removed from a US Airways flight for suspicious activity which included:

  • Asking for seat belt extenders when none were necessary
  • Switching seats
  • Not sitting in assigned seats
  • Making anti-American references infused with the name of Allah

Brave Americans saw that something was not right, notified the crew, and had the 6 men removed from the plane.  The removal of this provision will remove the protection from being sued for doing your civic duty.

House Republican Leader John Boehner yesterday warned Democrats of a public backlash if the “John Doe” provision is removed. “That language was put into this bill with broad bipartisan support making it clear that having Americans protected from silly lawsuits if they notice suspicious behavior and report it is just plain common sense,” Mr. Boehner said. “And why would they remove that language and I think they are asking for serious trouble if the language is in fact taken out.” Mr. Pearce said Democrats made a choice as to “whether they are going to side with the American people or with the terrorists.”

This provision is still available in the House, so please contact your representatives to make sure it stays. This provision was supposed to be the start of tort reform. So it is not so shocking to know that the ACLU is against this bill. Also, the organization CAIR, which has been linked with terrorists overseas, is against this provision as well.
