What a difference a day makes (in New Haven)

4 days ago, I wrote a post about a new piece of legislastion in New haven, CT

You can go to that post here

Yesterday, 31 illegal immigrants were rounded up in the town.

“There is truly no safe haven for fugitive aliens,” said Marc Raimondi, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency that conducted the raid.

“At 10 in the morning, the streets were just empty,” said John Lugo, an organizer for Unidad Latina en Acción, an advocacy group. “People were really very afraid all of the sudden. They still are. They think it will happen again.”

Empty? Why would the whole town be hiding? Is this whole town filled with illegals? According the Mayor, there are 10,000 illegals in a town of 125,000.

According to the NY Times:

Within hours, any sense of sanctuary that the city and advocates for immigrants advocates had developed over the years was turned upside down, replaced with fear.

It’s sad to see that the sanctuary of being in the country illegally is being turned upside down. Some argued that the raids were in direct response to the recent legislation that was passed offering ID cards to immigrants. For any of those who have dealt with the IRS or stood on line at DMV, we know that the government doesn’t move that quickly.
