Must Read of the Day: Hope for the death of the immigration bill

The Senate failed with a 45-50 vote to move forward towards final passage.  The bill needed 60 votes to move forward.

Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), still believes he’s actually doing something for the country, and wants to get this bill passed

“There are a lot of good things in this bill,” Reid said. “I’m a creature of the Senate. I understand we live by the rules that govern this body. I accept that. We’re going to do everything we can to pass this bill as soon as we can. When is that? I don’t know, but we’re going to work hard and try to put aside the hurt feelings that we have. The country needs and the Senate needs to do this.”

The country needs the Senate to do this? Maybe Mr. Reid should look at the country’s outcry over this bill and it’s near 80% disapproval rating. Republican presidential hopeful John McCain who is a big supporter of the bill has watched his presidential poll numbers drop with his support of this bill. McCain started as one of the front-runners with Giuliani, but in many polls he is either 3rd or 4th behind Romney and Thompson, a man who hasn’t even officially declared yet.

I think it’s great to see the drop in poll numbers of both this Senate and McCain because America is speaking! This is a temporary victory in what will continue to be a war.

While Reid insists the bill is not dead, a crowded Senate calendar complicates its prospects. Reid immediately moved onto energy policy after the vote.
